Blackfield - Pills

Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk

Blackfield are one of Israel's biggest musical exports, being held in such regard that new album 'IV' featured contributions from Jonathan Donahue (Mercury Rev), Brett Anderson (Suede) and Vincent Cavanagh (Anathema). With it's full release next week, the band is offering current single 'Pills' for stream and free download. This is the band's first album since 2011, which isn't a huge gap, but considering that main member Avid Geffen has worked on several other projects in between, and his main collaborator here, Steve Wilson, is also in Porcupine Tree amongst other bands, it's amazing they've found the time.

It's 'Pills' that will open the album and the numb vocals at the start which talk about making your fears disappear make it clear that this track it no ode to the joys of hedonism or drug taking, more the fact that we live in a time where we're all prescribed medication that slowly wears us out and leaves life a shallow void where it should be full of personality and vitality - "these days you don't have to feel". "There's a pill for every hour" is repeated over a stark but powerful alt-rock backing that comes to life with sweeping orchestration for the chorus. It's a frightening reminder of the culture we live in.
