Lucky Once - Highlines

Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk

Shades and a necklace in one. Nice look guys! Lucky Once (no tricks, they are a trio) unashamedly describe themselves as an indie-rock band who are influenced by The National, Joy Division, Interpol and so on. With so many bands arrogantly refusing to give their sounds a genre, let alone a few references this is a refreshing change. It also gives us an idea of where these guys' heads are musically, and therefore perhaps a better understanding of the music they're trying to create. They've just given us one song so far: 'Highlines'.

Also openly admitting that they put a heck of a lot of effort in to the track and are really proud of it is another refreshing change from bands acting casually about everything when you know that underneath that's not the case. 'Highlines' is a good song, it's not a great one, but it brings to mind that old favourite: potential. The song is reasonably well written and produced but has some way to go to match their idols. Don't write it off though; it's enjoyable, competent and is way better than the initial recordings by some bands who've gone on to fame and fortune. Watch this space.
