King Kool - Rocket Roll

Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk

The fact that this duo are supporting Black Rebel Motorcycle Club in a few days should tell you a thing or two about their sound. They like their guitars and they like them noisy. Rather than the variety of fuzz-rock that BRMC are known for, on 'Rocket Roll' King Kool add a bluesier edge to things, perhaps not unlike The Jim Jones Revue and similar bands. Naturally they cite The Stooges and Queens Of The Stone Age as influences, another sign of where they're coming from musically.

As singles go this is pretty good, but not spectacular. They're hitting all the right notes and have the production bang on; the fuzz doesn't stop but it doesn't overpower. It's more a case of creating dirty rock n' roll, and they do this brilliantly. You could argue that the song is a little repetitive, but we're willing to bet that this music was designed as much for the live arena as anywhere else, so watching them should be a pretty messy and spectacular experience.
