Lumerians - Life Without Skin

Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk

This will be the second single we've featured by San Franciscan band Lumerians following 'Dogon Genesis' around the time of the release of their new album 'The High Frontier' in Europe. It's still not out in the US but there's not long to wait. If you've been unable to enjoy the whole thing then this interesting new single should go some way to satisfying your cravings, as it's unusual, inventive and very good. Personally I'm not too good on languages, and although it would be easier to look up what these lyrics are sung in, it would be more fun/make me look stupid to have a guess instead. The accent sounds French, but the words don't. So I'll take a punt at Spanish.

To the music: Lumerians show their experimental nature here by beginning with an atmospheric, spoken-word section with a slightly otherworldly quality, but then they change tack and head down the autobahn to krautrock-influenced sounds. A Driving beat and vintage electronics; it's a startling change at first but it works wonderfully. As quickly as it starts, everything slows again to a simple, tribal beat slowly pounding away and sighed, wordless vocals. For the final section of the song, all of these elements combine to make a beautiful noise. Well worth investigating the album when you get the chance.
