One of our recent Swedish discoveries has been Shadow Shadow, the project of Mattias Friberg who ended his time roaming around Europe to retreat to a cottage in the Swedish countryside and begin working on some tunes. First we heard the retro electronica of 'Riviera', a song that looked to the past but also the future, and definitely had a current feel despite those analog sounds. The male/female vocals worked well too. On '1000001' he's ditched a couple of these aspects, as if to point out that he's no one-trick pony.
This song reduces the vintage synths to little more than a role far off in the background. The music here is totally modern alt-pop, and the song is a splendidly written and a real grower. You'll probably like it straight away, but once you get to know it then it'll lodge itself in your head. He's passed over his vocals too, so this is one female voice singing with real passion, but not in an over the top way. It's done to perfection, adding feeling without making the song a sickly over cooked disaster. A very good tune.
