As the monkey-featured frontman, currently reveling is his Roses garden renaissance once famously uttered: "it’s not where you’re from, it’s where you’re at". Wise words indeed, but what he didn't add is that there's no reason why these two places need necessarily be independent of one another. In the case of Washington Irving, where they are from are some of the more secluded centres of Scottish civilisation, while where they are at is making music that, inescapably, has ingrained Celtic mannerisms right at its crux.
Taken from April's five-track ‘Palomides Volume 1' EP (comprising the first half of the band's debut album which is getting a two-part digital release) 'You've Seen The Last of Me' is undeniably north of the border in its make-up. Indie-pop with a folk flourish, this is Vampire Weekend raised on Scott’s Porage Oats; Los Campesinos! tackling the ceilidh circuit. Though perhaps not as immediately thrilling as excellent early single 'Sisi', 'You've Seen The Last Of Me' is still a catchy composition from "The Washies" (yes I just made that nickname up) and one that given a fair wind could well attract a few new followers to their flock. Though the title may be firm in its sense of finality, we suggest this shouldn't be the last you hear of Washington Irving.
