Diver Dress - 7"

EP review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk

When Minneapolis band Diver Dress informed us they'd put out their debut 7" and thought we might like it, we weren't expecting five tracks. We've only got a digital copy, but it does seem that the four-piece have managed to cram the lot on one slice of vinyl. This is undoubtedly helped by the fact that they never get past the two-and-a-half-minute mark here, so by many band's standards the actual amount of music is only two songs' worth anyway. Plus, it turns out the 7" was actually released last summer, but releases like this can take their time to filter around the globe, and we're more than happy to sling some promotion at these guys.

The sound they make is a mix of garage, punk, lo-fi and surf and sounds like it was recorded on a strict diet of Red Bull. By the gallon. Short opener 'Sink' takes jangly '60s sounds and roughs them up a bit, adding some faraway vocals; 'Untitled 1' is perhaps more conventional DIY punk, but with a few interesting additions like the stop/start rhythm and the variety of guitar sounds. It's a strong track. Even better is 'Untitled 2' which again looks to the '60s, bringing in plenty of surf guitars and mixing them with '77 punk spirit and some indie jangling; 'Too Late' is perhaps the best here, blending all the above sounds into a glorious fizzing ball of noise-pop. They end with the epic (2:27) closer 'Spiders' which drops to a more grungy sound, slowing the pace and upping the guitar distortion. It might be a series of short, sharp shocks, but it's a fun one.
