We're back to boy/girl duos from around the New York area again, but Small Multiples aren't like the rest, if only because they don't make anything that could be described as dreampop. Consisting of pianist/songwriter Craig Hartley and guitarist Eli Friedmann, the pair first met at university before going their separate ways. Craig made contact again to look into working on some songs he'd written and Small Multiples was born. Their music doesn't consist solely of piano and guitar; there's an array of instruments here and actually quite a depth to the music which could be loosely termed alt-rock, but is at the experimental side of the spectrum.
'Know My Name' contains stuttering drums and what we assume to be distorted synths augmenting their more regular instruments which are supplied by a selection of friends/collaborators. Mild distortion cocoons the song and gives a warm and human effect to what could easily be a harsh and cold track. Taken from their debut, self-titled EP, this track shows an accomplished band at work and one who have ideas flowing freely. We're hoping that they don't go their separate ways again for a few years, because if this is the result of them working together then we'll happily take a couple of albums' worth, please.
