Caged Animals - Cindy + Me

Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk

The last time we featured Caged Animals on the site was eighteen months ago with the song 'All The Beautiful Things In The World'. The Brooklyn-based experimentalist is back with new material though, and 'Cindy + Me' is the first single to be taken from his forthcoming new album. There are a host of ideas going on here: at first this appears to be an indie-type number, but you can detect the influence of hip-hop here and also of the electro and alt-pop crowd with which he shares airspace. It all results in a track with much depth and many layers, and one that progresses as it goes on without every straying too far from the original idea.

It's a difficult skill to master in this day and age; individuality isn't something that comes easily when so many are making music and trying to put a unique stamp on it. The manner in which Caged Animals has gone about the construction of this song is interesting (we can play guess the instrument, but don't be surprised if the percussion is from kitchen utensils or other such strange ideas are included). What perhaps marks this song out most is Vincent Cacchione's lazy, half-spoken drawl. It's almost as though he can't be bothered to sing the song properly, and this coupled with such obvious innovation is possibly the key to this song's success. Or maybe it's all down to having a video that features some baboons...
