Firehorse - Bloodstream

Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk

In 2012 we briefly touched on the debut album by Firehorse which was called 'And So They Ran Faster...', but since then the more we've heard the better her music seem to become. In the lead-up to second album 'Pills From Strangers' which is out this coming week, we've enjoyed both free track 'Good' and now the single 'Bloodstream'. It could be that Leah Seigel is gradually becoming more confident and accomplished as her career progresses and the plaudits continue to pour in. Another reason why the new stuff seems to be sounding better is that Firehorse is now more a band than the solo project it began as, so a few more ideas may be being bounced around and the other members are presumably up to speed with the variety of music they should be making.

'Bloodstream' is, like the other songs we've heard, an interesting cross-breed of music. Ticking electronic beats and a very basic, retro keyboard line are all that is needed to open the song, along with those great vocals sat on top. So they do minimalist quite well, and it could be said that, comparatively speaking, this is a minimal electro-pop track anyway. When the rest of the band join in more depth is added and the song is raised to become a powerful alt-pop number, with those vocals gaining force as the band drive the song towards its climax with low bass and a bigger beat, but never smothering the song. It also retains a lightness thanks to other (possibly synth) effects that are added. Two albums in and it sounds as though Firehorse deserve a more major breakthrough.
