Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk
This week will see the release of the debut album from Pity Sex, a band from the city of Ann Arbor in Michigan. This first offering from the quartet will be called 'Feast Of Love' and is preceded by the single 'Wind Up', a must for anyone who likes their songs to be made from a solid buzz of guitar distortion. It's tempting to throw around the usual comparisons to other guitar-wielding alt-rock behemoths like Dinosaur Jr or Sugar, and this song would have fitted in nicely around the time that those bands broke onto the scene. It's a wall of noise that may also be of interest to fans of shoegaze and post-grunge. It's rock, but it's rock without the egos and the needless showing off.
As a slightly odd paradox, you couldn't really say that 'Wind Up' is purely about the song either. If you were to strip this down to just acoustic guitar and vocals it would work, but probably have nothing like the impact it does here; overloaded with that electrical buzz. The sound deserves equal billing to the song, which means we have two stars of the show, which means this song is twice as good as it could have been, right? Whatever hairbrained theories we come up with, there's little escaping the fact that this tune kicks some serious butt, and manages to do so without putting its focus on one particular aspect, it's simply an all-round good song.
