Villa Kang - Hallucinating Arkansas

Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk

Toronto producer Villa Kang put out a super EP recently called 'When The Future Was Ultra Modern', it would have been worth getting for the song 'Young Lovers' alone, but the rest was diverse and also very good. He's already back with a new single, and on this one he chooses to indulge in some slightly avant-garde electro-pop, again differing from the previous songs we've heard from him but not losing any quality along the way. Hopefully this rapid follow-up means he's on a roll at the moment, or is generally very prolific. Either way will be fine with us.

Quite where the name 'Hallucinating Arkansas' came from or what it means you'd have to ask Villa Kang himself. This isn't a particularly psychedelic track, but it is very ethereal and touches on dreampop, modern and vintage electronica as well as a pop base to plonk it all on. The song seems to drift in and out, almost as though it's a pulsating life form. An odd sensation, but a good one. We may well have said this in a previous review but it bears repeating. There are many solo artists making music in a DIY manner, at home in their bedroom or garage or wherever, and Villa Kang is probably up there with the best of them.
