Streak and the Raven - Ahora the Tipsy Queen

Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk

This is almost certainly the strangest song we'll feature all day, and it probably has the strangest video too, but we'll let you be the judge of that. It's definitely weird, and it's definitely mysterious, and it's definitely a bit creepy. As we've learned from previous posts about Finland's Streak and the Raven (check out singles 'Speed Of Light' and 'The Riverside') they're a unique and inventive band. Their debut album 'Love & War' is available now and contains a veritable box of unusual delights. You can't accuse them of following the crowd, that's for sure. The previous singles may have shown innovation but they did sound like singles.

This leads us on to latest single 'Ahora the Tipsy Queen'. Even the title suggests some sort of grown-up Alice In Wonderland-type adventure. This is probably one of the least "single" sounding songs we've heard for a while. And that's not to say it's a bad song, quite the opposite, but no-one in their right minds would pick this as a single. Thankfully Streak and the Raven aren't in their right minds so they've gone and done it anyway. The song is a repetitive, stabbing synth sound with ghostly vocals over the top and strange samples that sound a bit like a radio being tuned. Basically you have nearly three minutes of build up to the actual event. The twist being that there is no event. That's it. Three minutes of build up. It's bold, brave, balmy and a bit brilliant too.
