Straw Bear - Snobbery

In an example of music promotion being spread across the UK, this review is being written in The Isles Of Scilly, about a band who originate from Cambridge, are now based in London and were first brought to our attention by Manchester label Folk Police Recordings. Straw Bear's song 'Black Hive' was featured on that label's excellent various artists compilation album 'Weirdlore: Notes From The Folk Underground'. The band released their album 'Black Bank' at the end of last year and the latest single to be taken from that record is 'Snobbery', a song that shows another side to the band.

Less psychedelic than 'Black Hive', 'Snobbery' feels reflective in its storytelling and at points, particularly lyrically and with some of the strings, recalls Belle & Sebastian in their pomp. It's prime single material with an original video to match. The melodies here drift by peacefully, taking your mind with them. They've avoided all the trappings of folk music and semi-acoustic indie and created a tune that rises above both, almost begging for a wider audience; not in the sense that it's produced or written to be commercial, simply in the sense that, really, it's too good to just be ignored.
