The Swiss Alternative - Rewind

Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk

The Swiss Alternative, eh? Well it's not very often we feature Swiss alternative music on the site, but it has been known. A look at the opening few frames of the video to new single 'Rewind' shows coastal vistas which are a possible indication that we may not be dealing with a Swiss band at all. Mind you, the video is misleading in many ways. It looks like it was filmed on the European mainland, possibly southern Europe, yet on closer inspection it turns out that The Swiss Alternative are British, which is, of course, an alternative to being Swiss. So they've actually picked quite a suitable name after all.

If we cut to the chase, 'Rewind' is the kind of song that you can instantly appreciate, and one that stands up to repeat listens too. If we ignore the fact that you can almost hear elements of The Eagles about parts of it, it beomes even more impressive. Perhaps a better comparison would be early Midlake. They do harmonies, they do well-produced (but not over-produced) songs and the arrangements are subtle but important. Apparently there's an EP on the way, but the band are brand spanking new and this is their debut single. Other new bands, we suspect, may be feeling a little jealous.
