EP review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk
After featuring the stunningly lovely dreampop of the title-track a few weeks back, time is almost here for the release of the 'Hypolight' EP by hotly-tipped (and rightly so) UK group Mt. Wolf. The London-based gang who originate from far and wide might be early on in their career but they're yet to put a foot wrong. 'Life Size Ghosts' was a sublime EP, especially for a debut; it was as if they'd been honing their craft for years. And now this new EP follows in its footsteps as being actually really good. There's something about the powerful yet atmospheric soundscapes they create that fit those inch-perfect and captivating vocals as if they were made for each other.
As well as the song 'Hypolight' itself, we're treated to what's best described as the whole of the chillwave world upping their game tenfold and producing trip-hoppy magic that serves more than one purpose. You can simply play this EP as a mood-setter in the background or, as I'm doing now, stick a decent pair of headphones on and get lost in the Kate Bush discovers ambient electro of tracks like 'Veins' and the twinkling ''Shapeshift'. Those vocals flutter around with the kind of freedom that few manage. Mt. Wolf have got the balance of clean production and a little bit of magic down to a tee.
