Dinosaur Jr. are a bit like Wales. As we all know, Wales is a standard measurement of size (along with double-decker buses and football pitches) and is commonly quoted in news articles ahead of possibly better known neighbours Ireland and England. Read a review of one of the current crop of bands with a passion for the alt-rock and grunge scenes of the early 90s and more often than not Dinosaur Jr. will be used as a comparison in favour of bigger and better known bands of the time such as Pearl Jam. Is this a measure of whose music has stood the test of time the best?
It quite possibly is. Lots of US alternative bands of that era are either still going or reformed and it's Dinosaur Jr. who gain as much praise as any of the rest. And it's with good reason, their current album 'I Bet On Sky' hasn't seen them change much from the days before the silvery hair, and neither has the quality of the output, with the record containing some tracks to rival the best of their back catalogue. New single 'Don't Pretend You Didn't Know' being once such number, and a song that contains everything that makes them great; those unmistakable vocals, any gaps being plugged by guitar, plus that much copied lead guitar style that has characterised them for more years than many of their newer fans will have been alive. Cân dda iawn!
