Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk
Balmy North-Easterners Johnny5thWheel&thecowards released one of the most interesting and slightly bizarre albums of last year in 'Music To Shake'n'Shuffle To' and we had every right to expect another single release from that record, what with it only being a few months old. Instead they're pressing ahead with new material already, so that's even better. Out on April 1st, 'The Diary Of A Liar' finds them in their usual parallel universe where everything is a bit weird and not quite as it should be, and they're mixing together the genres once again with this one.
The lyrics could be taken from some kind of fantasy novel and are intriguing as ever. Musically this is a very cinematic track; it takes in 60s easy-listening sounds, along with psychedelia, dreampop and the score from a Western movie to combine with a ticking beat. They're pretty much alone in this one, comparisons don't come easily. They'd be a hybrid of at least half a dozen other bands if you were to dissect them. If you found some of their debut quirky but not necessarily a great listen, then that could be corrected here. As well as the usual obtuse touches 'The Diary Of A Liar' is a catchy skewed pop tune at heart.
