Dune - Oh Innocence/Shoestring

Single reviews by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk

Australian artist Jade MacRae has done much to impress the music world with her brief existence as Dune so far (flanked by a couple of bandmates) and has drawn comparisons to Santigold, Chairlift and Little Dragon, all of which sound fairly accurate, although her sound is at the poppier end of these artists' output. Her debut EP 'Oh Innocence' was released this week and features both new single (the title track) as well as last year's attention grabbing debut 'Shoestring', plus more new tracks and remixes, so it's value for money at seven tunes. But of course if the material is poor it becomes bad value...

You'll be safe with this one though; the song 'Oh Innocence' is an experimental pop tune with a summery feel despite it being low on tempo. It's the music and vocals that act as the honey that sweetens the song and gives that shimmering, sunshine sound, along with tribal drums. That might be the title-track but 'Shoestring' is quite possibly better, and not just because it's more upbeat. This, again, is a sunshine-pop track and ticks along nicely through verses which are made from well constructed electro-pop, and then we're given a burst of voices that automatically give the whole thing a lift, resulting in something a touch more addictive.
