Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk
Alright then, this one's a challenge. Our categorisation and genre fabrication skills are quite well honed, we could probably put a load of bands together and make up a pretend scene just as well as the rest of the music press. But this new single from French band Papier Tigre has us struggling to be precise. We've got some punk going on here, we've also got some post-punk and some modern alt-rock and possibly even math-rock. 'Personal Belongings' sounds a bit like lots of bands you know but is totally individual at the same time. Let's just go with experimental rock, because that can just about cover anything.
Based in Nantes, this trio have been around for about five years now and this single will be their first release on Chicago's Sick Room Records and will coincide with a US tour (check their website for updates, we don't have the dates yet). It's an unusual song is this, but that's a good thing; it's always better not to settle for the formulaic. The drumming is stuttering and various other bits of percussion seem to crop up at odd points, and it's much the same story with the guitar. Everything's very jagged and stabbing but not in an awkward way, in fact it's just about uncomfortable enough to be considered a very fine piece of challenging whatever the heck you want to call it.
