Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk
It may sound like a solo artist, but Turrentine Jones is a trio from Manchester who formed in 2010 with a different format from your average three piece set-up. These guys are heavy on the Hammond organ as a fundamental part of their make-up. Organ and Manchester may make you automatically think of The Charlatans and Inspiral Carpets, but there's nothing baggy about 'Della May', although it's highly likely that all three bands have a similar taste in music or were at least influenced by some of the same bands. The whole Madchester thing was born out of combining the new dance culture with a love of 60s pop.
This excellent single is definitely looking back a few decades for inspiration. Turrentine Jones have a more bluesy sound, they've been compared to The Doors, but we're thinking that there's just as much of later period Small Faces to this song, especially once you get past the first verse. It could be lifted straight off Ogden's Nut Gone Flake. Although we've dismissed the whole baggy thing, 'Della May' does have a groove to it and is packed with soul, making it something of a musical mongrel. Crossbreeding has led to some amazing songs though, and although this track is firmly retro, it's got definite champion pedigree.
