Five For Free #161

King Of The Opera - The Floating Song

Alberto Mariotti is no newcomer. Under his previous name of Samuel Katarro he's released records in the past, but 'Nothing Outstanding' marks his first album as part of a band; King Of The Opera. Having already received support from luminaries such as Patti Smith, Julian Cope and Pere Ubu, these guys could be well on their way to success. Tracks like 'The Floating Song' prove exactly why.

Tricky - Nothing's Changed

The king of trip-hop returns with this first track from new album 'False Idols', which is out at the end of May. On first single 'Nothing's Changed' we get to hear little of Tricky himself except for the trademark atmosphere and chopped up beats. It's a ghostly song led by a female vocal with a probably political rather than emotional message.

Cocovan - Roosevelt Hotel

Crafting much lighter electronic textures is French instrumentalist and producer Cocovan, a fiercely independent artist who's turned down numerous A&R offers to pursue the opportunity to make the music she wanted to make, not what she was told to make. A series of tracks will be released this year, starting with the excellent electro-pop of 'Roosevelt Hotel', written and produced entirely herself.

Brave Baby - Lakeside Trust

Yes, another track from South Carolina's Brave Baby and another from their very good new album 'Forty Bells'. Have a quick search of the site if you're new to them and you'll find more freebies, but the upbeat and catchy 'Lakeside Trust' will probably be enough to ensure that fans of quality alt-rock and guitar-pop are onside right away. Another corker.

Helado Negro - Mitad Del Mundo

This track comes as a welcome diversion for Weathervane Music's 'Shaking Through' series, which has generally concentrated on US alt-rock and similar genres. Here Helado Negro creates an original piece of modern dub and combines it with more electronic sounds. The result, 'Mitad Del Mundo', is probably one of the finest offerings the series has thrown up so far.
