Despite not being able to attend or hearing any reviews, we can only assume that Welsh teenagers Catfish and the Bottlemen had a great experience playing Reading and Leeds festivals. Gigs that big can be a valuable experience for any band, let alone a youngish band who are just starting their musical journey. Prior to these appearances (and more besides) they released a single, and even B-side, the free download 'Pacifier', was a storming indie-rock tune. As promised, they follow up what were probably the gigs of their lives with a new single, one that was written about that age-old problem of escaping small town life for something more exciting.
The subject matter isn't new, but neither is it a cliché; it's simply part of rock n' roll's DNA. 'Rango' is another whirlwind ride of punky guitars and widescreen melodies that show both ambition and feet firmly remaining on the ground. These guys know not to get carried away, they know the work involved. Having long since passed gigs numbering three figures, you don't need to tell them about the work involved in making things happen. This is why some great bands never make it. Catfish and the Bottlemen are happy to put a shift in, to do the hours and build those foundations. If they can keep the tunes flowing whilst doing so then they'll win over plenty of hearts.
