Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk
There is a true cinematic quality to Mike Hughes' début single. Now, it would be so easy to place it somewhere across the Rio Grande, but there is an arch sense of Englishness prevailing to it, that this is the world of Shane Meadows, Iain Banks, Alex Turner, of Mike Hughes. Where the mundane everyday comes alive in the small print, Romeo and Juliet claim jobseekers, and the tale is told of '(That Girl Is…) Misery'. You’re brought in with Hughes' vibrant voice, a shimmering guitar shake and rolling drums. Before you know your foot is stomping and the rest of you ain't far behind.
We are treated to some perfect "heys" before a Hawley-esque solo takes us to the masterfully executed break. Hughes' voice standing forth and the sweetest lone horn echoing out, letting our mind frame a shot of two rugged, sun-bleached, moonshine (or eight pints and endless vodka red bulls)-soaked enemies staring down each other, waiting on the signal to…! Then we're hit with the epic galloping rush that pounds us out breathlessly to the end, as we hear the song's embittered warning “that girl is…misery” repeated as the sun sets. As starts go, you’d be hard to fault this one, and it leaves you simply wanting more.
