MJ Hibbett & The Validators - I Want To Find Out How It Ends

Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk

The only thing you can be sure of when it comes to oddball indiepop band MJ Hibbett & The Validators is that they don't really do normal. So the follow-up to their 'War Of The Worlds'-style guitar-pop concept album 'Dinosaur Planet' is to be an online audio sitcom entitled 'A Brief History Of Time Travel'. By this point you're either groaning or anticipating the next batch of unpredictable, witty capers. 'I Want To Find Out How It Ends' is to be the theme tune to the sitcom and has all the hallmarks that you'd expect from a single by this band. It has to be said that (unless the notion has already put you off) it's one of their best songs.

It's as much about the video here. We see the band as children rehearsing on an empty stage at what appears to be some time in the 1980s. Posters of The Smiths and Joy Division are on a bedroom wall, a Stone Roses T-shirt is being worn... and then the band find a box of "Time Bracelets" which allow them to time travel. So they set the controls for 2013 and head to (presumably) the very same hall to find grown-up version of themselves playing to a crowd. This initial excitement is soon dampened when they get a better look at the slightly expanded waistlines, bald heads where hair used to thrive and the general impression of a bunch of middle-aged musicians who probably didn't turn out to look like Michael J. Fox or whoever they'd hoped. Needless to say, they soon scarper and head back in time to the boundless possibilities of youth. Great stuff.
