Dark Bells - Want

Single review by jay@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk

Coming on like the methamphetamine-spliced child of Kim Gordon, Kim Deal and Madonna, Dark Bells hit us with the urgent, angular and addictive single 'Want'. There is the deliciously throbbing Pixies-esque bass bringing us in and a shimmering, discordant Sonic Youth strangulated guitar riding over it. Then we have the razor-sharp yet honeyed vocals from Teneil Throssell which warn us of "that's what you get when you fall in love", switching from the biting to the daring us, with a hit of wonderful harmonies bizarrely akin to a lost Madonna song.

Then it all slows into a beguiling, softer middle before unleashing a pounding, raucous, riotous cacophony, surge to the end which finally closes 'Want' with the a raw punch of feedback. When all that is done, you find that 'Want' has one last parting gift. It’s is a true earworm and stays in your head until the next play.
