Whales in Cubicles - Wax & Feathers

Single review by jay@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk

There are good and bad ways to get your music out there. You could "twerk" Gary Barlow (or Nicole or even Louie, whatever works for you), or you could simply put out a succession of superlative singles, gig till the tyres fall off your Transit, then push the van and gig even more. Thankfully Whales in Cubicles have taken the latter option and with their latest single 'Wax & Feathers' they show again why they are a band who everyone should be catching. You can easily make your own comparisons, we can all do that with all music. What really is important is the song, and with 'Wax & Feathers' we have been given a skyscraping, emotive anthem that will enrapture you long after its end. In fact you will just play it again.

You are hurried in on sublime drums and near whispered vocals, then the song starts to unfurl and fly. It sweeps you up, heading towards that unforgiving sun. Elemental harmonies take you soaring above the clouds, then another rush of stellar guitars raise you even higher, soon you are simply lost in the vista and swooning to 'Wax & Feathers', succumbing to the wonder and glory that is held in expertly crafted peaks of exquisite dynamics and effortless structure. We've waited a long time, but surely the forthcoming album has to be one of the highlights of next year already.
