Wymond Miles - Passion Play

Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk

Writer's block must be an alien concept to San Francisco's Wymond Miles. Last year he released his début album 'Under The Pale Moon', soon to be followed by the EP 'Earth Has Doors', and now a second album, 'Cut Yourself Free'. It's worth pointing out at this point that he's also the guitarist from The Fresh & Onlys, themselves not a band to wait long between releases. If you're yet to sample his solo material, then the fact that he's recently supported Deerhunter and has support slots with Weekend and Crocodiles coming up ought to tell you that he has the respect of some impressive peers. So what of new single 'Passion Plays'?

Well, you can see how that trio of headliners would show interest here. There's a touch of Deerhunter's experimentation, some melodic indie sounds that would sit well with Weekend, and, song-wise at least, a slight resemblance to Crocodiles. This isn't fuzz-rock by any sense of the imagination, but it's written in a similar way and you can easily imagine Crocodiles reworking it. A reworking isn't needed though, this is a very good track in its current form. It's no wonder the man is seemingly in demand.
