Vices - Dying Day

Single review by KevW

It's been a busy old time for London experimental indie group Vices. They gave a low-key release to EP 'Hotel Monsoon' earlier this year (it's rightly about to get a proper full-scale release on September 24th) and have subsequently toured The US and Europe in the company of Dry The River, Everything Everything and Band Of Skulls. Not a bad start to their career then, especially when you add in the fact that they were spotted by noted producer Jeff Saltzman who then took them into his Hollywood studio to lay down debut album 'The Wind I Walk' into. It's been a dream start that looks to continue as, according to the band's Facebook page, they're already working on a second album. Until then there's the small matter of building more coverage with their self-produced EP which should give you an idea about why such a fuss has been made already.

Taken from it is single 'Dying Day' which shows the band in their full experimental pop majesty, juggling styles like the clown-princes of innovation. The beats could be from a hip-hop or R&B cut, the electronics sampled from a classic trip-hop track (and don't be surprised if this track gets the sample or remix treatment itself, it's perfectly suited). Yet this is neither of those genres, this is an indie band with a pop song, ripping up the rulebook and layering sounds and vocals and beats to the point where it almost defies classification. Rather than inventing a fancy new name for this sound we'll go with our old favourite - alt-pop. That fits it like a glove mind, although comparisons are difficult to come by unless you mix together bits of several other artists. The closest we can think of is Bristol innovators Malachai. That band happen to be brilliant, let's hope Vices can keep up the good work and match them.
