Out This Week - 2nd September 2013

The Black Tambourines - Crosseyed

Falmouth quartet The Black Tambourines have been together for a while, having released their first single in 2010, so a debut album has been some time coming. This week it arrives, and it's self-titled. Their time together has served them well and 'Crosseyed' sounds like an expertly fluid modern garage-rock track, so these guys are in with a shout of going places.

TV Ghost - Five Colors Blind

Following our recent review of 'Elevator' by Indiana's premier psych/shoegaze/post-punk band TV Ghost, we promised you more. Well, their new album 'Disconnect' is out this week and is sounding pretty big. There are a number of tracks we could have picked (and you can stream them all below), but for some reason 'Five Colors Blind' seems to sum up their various aspects best.

Grooms - I Think We're Alone Now

Maintaining their record of an album every two years, Brooklyn band Grooms give us 'Infinity Caller' this week and it's their usual superb mix of indie, noise-pop and punky alt-pop. 'I Think We're Alone Now' isn't a cover of the song made famous by Tiffany, but it is an energetic bundle of musical energy that's just bursting with melody.

Celestial Shore - Swimmer's Sinking Feeling

Another band we featured very recently are another lot from Brooklyn, Celestial Shore. The well-connected group have their album '10x' out to download this week (physical copies a week later) and perhaps summing up many people's feelings at this time of year, here's 'Summer's Sinking Feeling' which is a soft and experimental psych-pop tune.

OBLIGATORY RECORD OF THE WEEK

Babyshambles - Nothing Comes To Nothing

We all know the tabloid Peter Doherty, and we all know the magic The Libertines created. Many will agree that Carl's career since then hasn't been spectacular, but as for Peter? Well it's been a rollercoaster. No shows, odd behavior, ongoing drug addiction... we needn't go on. Although no album since has matched his first band, there have been glimpses of greatness. To pick a few songs (some of which date back to those days) released since the split, 'For Lovers', 'Killamangiro', 'Delivery', the superlative 'Albion' and more are all top-drawer; the man still has it in him to come up with the goods. If he can rid himself of his demons then truly great things could await. The new Babyshambles album 'Sequel To The Prequel' is out this week and is their most consistent yet, with the band sounding confident and tight as a duck's arse. Stream it below, it's worth it. Forget the pantomime, forget the rumours, listen to the music. I think you'll probably find that in single 'Nothing Comes To Nothing', Babyshambles have come up with one of the very best songs of the eventful career of Peter Doherty.
