Wavves - That's On Me

Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk

A few years ago it was looking increasingly as though Nathan Williams' Wavves would be a short-lived project, or even that, worse still, Nathan Williams' self-destructive behavior might lead to the band not being the only thing that was short-lived. Drug-induced breakdowns and erratic behavior are now thankfully things of the past (as far as we can tell!) and since then the band has grown in stature. There will be fans who miss those noisy early releases, but they've hardly turned into Dire Straits or anything. The San Diego group look to have a settled trio of members and keep churning out lo-fi garage/surf/punk tunes as if it was second nature.

Latest album 'Afraid Of Heights' continued the success achieved by 'King Of The Beach' before it, even becoming their biggest chart hit. New single 'That's On Me' encapsulates why. Wavves are still a resolutely independent band in terms of the music they make, and this track adheres to their DIY ethic; it's low on production but what production is there is perfect. It's also a catchy little number, from the chiming guitars that open the song through to the grungy stylings and the big chorus; the kind of chorus that many pop bands would kill for. It's been a journey and a few members have come and gone, but Wavves seem to be in exactly the right place at the moment, and another couple of albums of this standard will see that they're not quickly forgotten if and when they do call it a day, which hopefully won't be for a while.
