Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk
Given their long and highly acclaimed past, the last album by of Montreal left a few fans scratching their heads. 'Paralytic Stalks' marked a slight departure for the band and didn't quite achieve the success of some of their previous ten albums. With a twelfth long-player called 'Lousy with Sylvianbriar' due in October, the band have dropped the first single which is likely to reassure those few that felt their favourite band might be drifting away from them. There can be little argument that 'Fugitive Air' finds Kevin Barnes' prolific collective on fine form.
It was perhaps not the quality that puzzled some folks, more the differing styles, but here they're back to what they do best: writing hook-filled indie/pop songs. 'Fugitive Air' follows an age-old format but it's full of melody and the music seems to flow freely, incorporating slide-guitar and an almost country feel on occasion, but not so much as to deviate from the sound that made them such a renowned band in the first place. This sounds like the classic guitar-pop of old and contains some nice harmonies. They haven't run out of steam just yet.
