Irish band Von Shakes might not be overly well known on this side of the Atlantic yet, by the US has taken to them already, leading them to split time between Dublin and New York, in fact they'll be playing in the Big Apple this weekend. There are a few clues as to why this might be in their music; this style of confident indie-rock is clearly inspired by some of the best known names on the US alternative scene, and you can even hear echoes of Springsteen, but perhaps if he'd become a member of The Strokes. The obvious direct comparison would therefore be The Gaslight Anthem, a band so popular we're mentioning them almost daily at the moment.
New track 'Robinson Crusoe' is the first to be taken from their forthcoming new album 'Bohemia' which is out later this year. Expect an underground sound but with ambitious songs. Von Shakes might take scratchy riffs and a gritty nature from the indie scene, but the songs have outgrown that and could sound at home on bigger stages; they know their way around a chorus and 'Robinson Crusoe' is surely a song they'll be hearing sung back at them by the crowd before too long. They do have a following back home, in the UK and in Europe, perhaps the new album will see this increase.
