Filligar - New Local

Single review by jay@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk

Filligar come cresting on a wave of something akin to old-fashioned hype. They have earned this the hard way, with a whole lot of hard work on the road and in the studio. And it's pleasing to say that the new single, 'New Local', preceding the album 'Hexagon' for once justifies the hype. This is a superb slice of drive-time, Americana rock. It probably will do nothing in this country, as we have a habit of ignoring something so purely American sounding. Then that's at your loss.

This is a pounding, uplifting, anthemic song that recalls prime Kings of Leon and The Gaslight Anthem. It's built on pile-driving drums and one of those sky-high choruses. 'New Local' may not of been written with stadiums in mind, but it sure will fit them well. That's not to say that this is some formulaic song, it has a real earthiness to it, with a roaring piano, looseness, and raucousness that could see fans of Mumfords enjoy as much as anyone. By the third listen it is truly routed in your head and simply builds and builds over louder and louder plays. Let's hope the album matches 'New Local''s promise.
