Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk
Unless they're being ironic or deliberately misleading, it doesn't take a genius to guess what the music of The Stargazer Lilies might sound like, especially given the name of the song and the artwork. With past form in dance group Soundpool, multi-instrumentalist John Cep and singer/bassist Kim Field decided it was time to "make respite in the warm and woozy sounds of a new shoegaze-infused project", and so The Stargazer Lilies were born. Without naming names, there have been numerous occasions where musicians have decided to completely change genre and the results have been disastrous. That's not the case here, this duo (live they're joined by EJ DeCoske and Johnny Lancia) seem to have a perfect understanding of what they need to do.
With a debut album due out in September, this single is the perfect aperitif, with overlaid vocals seeming to surround you and the constant buzz of guitars making the whole thing shimmer as brilliantly as a vivid sunset over the sea, this is the point where shoegaze and dreampop meet and it's done with near perfection. If you've always thought distorted guitars were just noise then you're either my gran or you've been listening to the wrong bands, because here the break is beauty not pain. 'We are the Dreamers' promises very much, let's hope the album delivers more of the same.
