Big French - Payback

Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk

Is it possible to make an epic-sounding song that only lasts a minute-and-a-half? Apparently so, and Big French have worked out how to do it. Info on the band is a little scarce (and having a name that throws up a whole load of non music related subjects in Google doesn't help), but the group apparently got together in 2011 and include members of Great Valley and Blanche Blanche Blanche. Their debut album 'Downtown Runnin'' is released next week.

Single 'Payback' is totally instrumental and seems to take influence from both prog-rock and hair-metal but without really sounding like either. The closest comparison we can think of is perhaps Frank Zappa. There's a whole load of keyboards that could be from Van Halen's 'Jump' and loads of hectic guitar that could be from the same band, but the production is lo-fi and this brings it closer to powerpop than anything. There's no sign of indulgence either, but in 90 seconds there's not really much time for it.
