The Capsules - Time Will Only Tell

Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk

It's been going rather well for Kansas band (currently based in Dallas) The Capsules of late. New video 'Time Will Only Tell' wracked up a ton of views when it was premiered by Muzu.tv recently and is is a mesmerizing watch, harking back to the shady band members and colourful back-lighting that was the style of choice at the height of the first wave of shoegaze and dreampop twenty-odd years ago. Sound-wise, The Capsules draw on that era heavily on this new single too. 'Time Will Only Tell' is lifted from their debut album 'Northern Lights, Southern Skies' which was released back in January, but seems to be gaining extra momentum as word spreads.

They call themselves a dreampop band and that aspect is definitely here, although their music is less ethereal and perhaps closer to bands like School Of Seven Bells. The upbeat nature of this single also has one foot in shoegaze, yet there's a big pop aspect to the tunes. That's not in a commercial way, more that they write melodic guitar-pop and then take the songs and form them into different shapes that are more reminiscent to the bands they listen to (references include My Bloody Valentine and The Jesus & Mary Chain, but perhaps more tellingly, Metric and The Cure; neither afraid of giving a poppier feel to their alternative sounds). Currently, it feels (and sounds) like The Capsules have the potential to do as well as the likes of Metric and School Of Seven Bells, but I guess that will depend on promotion, word-of-mouth and a solid follow-up. So if you'll pardon the pun, time will only tell...
