Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk
It was just a couple of weeks ago that we featured half of the new double A-side single from London garage-punk band The Fades. 'Eight Times A Day' was a decent, if fairly routine, ragged stomper about wanting plenty of loving, but now that we've heard the track that accompanies it on its Valentine's day release we have to say that it's 'Free Little Pill' that comes out on top. It may not have the energy and immediacy - the general qualities you'd expect from a single - but it's definitely a superior track in pretty much every way, and that's not to say that 'Eight Times A Day' isn't a good tune (because we've already established that it is).
Again there's maybe not too much reading between the lines needed to grasp that the song is about drugs, the cover art is even made up of a mosaic of pills. Just what drug this is a homage to isn't clear, but lines like "longing for my time with you, I need you here to help me through... that brings me back to you" suggest that it's possibly addictive, and if not it's something that supplies, shall we say, a pick me up. The pills in question probably didn't come from the doctor. The song is almost ballad-like in its pace but a steady beat and crisp guitars hold the edginess that the band generally work with. It's this track rather than 'Eight Days A Week' that should be the main reason to add this release to your collection.
