Cultfever - Animals

Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk

The debut album by Brooklyn's Cultfever made a minor dent in the indie world last year and they'll be hoping to make further inroads with an appearance at SXSW and the release of new single 'Animals' very soon. Quite where this fixation with animals comes from we dare not ask and possibly don't want to know. But there's a tiger on the cover and the B-side is called 'Chicken. Their debut LP (which actually was initially given a low-key release in 2011) has a song on it called 'Farm'. It's a pair of brand new tracks make up this new 7" and download release though.

The music these two make is a hell of a lot of fun. 'Animals' is similarly bleepy sparkle-pop to that by which Passion Pit made their name. They're somewhere in a nomansland between pop and alternative and this suits them fine. The only people who won't like the A-side are miserable gits, and they don't count anyway. 'Chicken' is in that same nomansland and is decent enough but it is distinctly B-side material and pales in comparison to 'Animals'. SXSW is known as much for being a festival of barbecued meat as it is its music, so we hope they don't get too upset by the smoking flesh on display.
