Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk
Before reviewing 'Plane', the last single from the most recent album by North Carolina's Mount Moriah, we were told that forthcoming second full-length 'Miracle Temple' would be the band's breakthrough album. This statement came from their record label, so naturally we took this prediction with more than our recommended daily allowance of salt, but 'Plane' was a good tune though, so we couldn't rule this out completely. Plus, Merge Records would have heard the record; we hadn't. So a couple of weeks on we get to hear the first cut for said second album, it's called 'Bright Light'.
Now you can't judge an album on one song, let alone predict its sales potential, which is lucky. 'Bright Light' isn't the huge, big-hitting alt-rock classic that has launched many a modern classic (say, for example, 'Rebellion (Lies)' by Arcade Fire), but again we can't say that 'Miracle Temple' doesn't have a sackful of those on it. Let's go with what we've got: this might not be immediate or jaw-dropping, but it's a damn fine song nonetheless. At first it appears a little pedestrian, but like so many good songs it ripens with more exposure and is more enjoyable with each play. That guitar riff is so simple yet so effective; another case where the hypnotism of repetitiveness can work wonders in the right hands. We can't write off that breakthrough just yet.
