Out This Week - 18th February 2013

Destruction Unit - Evil Man

It probably doesn't take a genius to work out that Destruction Unit are from some frazzled part of America. They formed in Phoenix, Arizona and psychedelic new single 'Evil Man' has the hallmarks of some of the finest desert-rock bands from down the years. The track is taken from their new album 'Void' which is out this week and will likely take you on a few more cosmic trips.

Girls Names - Hypnotic Regression

We tend not to focus too much on artwork, but that's a piss poor effort. Thankfully the music's better. Since we first featured them in the summer, Northern Irish group Girls Names have driven the hype monitor off the scale and plaudits are pouring in for their album 'The New Life'. 'Hypnotic Regression' has a reverby, 80s indie sound with a bassline borrowed from The Cure and is pretty damn fine.

Radar Brothers - If We Were Banished

Now celebrating 20 years of making music, Californians Radar Brothers give us their brand new album 'Eight'. There have been a few line-up changes down the years and a couple of additional members on this record, but they're still making spacious, cosmic indie-rock with just a hint of krautrock thrown in. Here's the album's opening cut 'If We Were Banished'.

Flowers - When You Lie

Taking the fi right down lo are Flowers, rising stars of London's noise-pop scene, 'When You Lie' sounds a bit like the demo of something that was later cleaned up to go on the C86 tape. The drums sound like they're from a Casio keyboard, the guitars are the epitome of scruffy and the whole thing is loosely held together with a big dollop of melody. Lovely stuff.

OBLIGATORY RECORD OF THE WEEK

Jacco Gardner - The Ballad Of Little Jane

Jacco Gardner is one of a kind at the moment. Plenty of people are recreating various sounds of the 1960's, from soul to garage to psychedelia to vintage pop. Nobody but the Dutchman has quite mastered the psychedelic whimsy that spawned albums like 'Sergeant Pepper...' or 'The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn'. We could have picked any number of songs from his new album 'Cabinet Of Curiosities', but in the end we went for 'The Ballad Of Little Jane' which is possibly what would have happened if Syd Barrett had written 'She's Leaving Home'. It's quite a fantastical and magical world this man inhabits. We'd like to move in.
