Five For Free #157

Chirping - Flicker & Fade

You can generally count on Sweden to produce the goods when it comes to indie-type music. Stockholm's Chirping are setting their sights fairly high, already mentioning themselves alongside The National, Echo & The Bunnymen and er, U2. Single 'Flicker & Fade' justifies these comparisons with none of the self importance of Bono's lot. Impressive.

Spark Alaska - Feel The Flowers

Originally from America, Lorenzo Cook grew up in Belgium before returning to his native country recently. So not much to do with Alaska the, but that didn't stop Arctic Monkeys. As Spark Alaska, the 18 year old student has come up with a delightful and more complex than it appears track in 'Feel The Flowers', with plenty of hooks and even a whistle-along section that isn't annoying. Very good work.

Chains Of Love - Pretend

Apparently retro garage-popsters Chains Of Love are getting a bit sick of the retro tag, so may gently be moving more up to date on their second album. New single 'Pretend' does indicate a slight move in that direction but thankfully it's still The Ronettes meeting the finest R&B groups of the time for now. Don't go changing too much, you were perfect as you were.

Pati Yang - I Am Ready

We've been told to expect a bit of a change in style from Pati Yang on her new material compared to previous EPs such as 'Hold Your Horses'. 'I Am Ready' will be taken from her debut album which is due later this year with a single proper set for May. On 'I Am Ready' she sets out a heavy atmosphere with clanging guitars and sultry vocals. We're looking forward to more.

J.P. Rose - If You Ask Me

We've been following the work of singer-songwriter J.P. Rose quite a bit these past couple of months and this week the LA artist released a couple of free downloads for Valentine's day. We've deliberately avoided all the half-baked covers you usually get overloaded with this time of year, but in original track 'If You Ask Me' Rose has come up with some quality pop
