Band To Check Out: Selenian

Article by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk

With so much dreampop and shoegaze still doing the rounds it's starting to become a bit boring. As you'll know (or have guessed from the title of the blog) we're big fans of this type of thing, so with the etherealness table now about level with the UK's brimming water table, the sandbags are out and the floodplains are on standby. But then every now and then a new band comes along who are carefully carving sounds into beautiful hazy shapes like Selenian and it's impossible to ignore them. The French band haven't been together for very long and have already committed some seriously luscious sounds to tape, the kind that made Slowdive such a legendary cult band that they're regularly used as comparisons to this day.

There doesn't appear to be any material available to purchase yet, but there's a handful of angelic, shimmering pieces of music to stream on their SoundCloud page. Everything aside from a prominent bassline is smudged together on 'The Hole', to the point where it's not even clear what language they're singing in. 'Shine (Part 2)' is a bit like new-wave fed through too many echo machines and then mixed with 80s pop, whereas 'Sneakers' is a bit like The Jesus & Mary Chain playing a Neu! cover far off in the distance. As initial favourites go we're drawn to the simply lovely, swooshy two part track 'Sunday Diving'. Selenian are pretty much an Indian head massage for the soul. Bugger it, we're getting out our masks and snorkels and diving right on in. Slowly, of course.
