Wildmen - Haters Gonna Hate

Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk

If you were played this blindfold you'd quite possibly guess that you were hearing some American garage revisionists, maybe like Crocodiles or The Soft Pack. This sound accurately mimics bands of that scene, yet Wildmen are an Italian duo who sound like they know their Nuggets. On 'Haters Gonna Hate' a punky riff meets echoey vocals and the chorus almost turns into The Standelles' seminal single 'Dirty Water'. It's a heck of a tune despite being entirely derivative, and to be honest is streets ahead of what similar retro guitar bands are doing, partly by virtue of them playing like they really mean it. It's not just turn up and press record material.

On the flip it gets even more like a throwback and we're certain they've nicked that piano line from somewhere but we can't quite put our fingers on it (EDIT: It's 'Night Time Is The Right Time' by The Strangeloves). Oddly, other than this the song brings a different vibe altogether, combining modern, almost electro beats and various sounds and samples. So whether they're stuck in the past or not we can't be certain, but we should find out soon enough, their eponymous debut album is due for release on March 14th. If you like Black Lips, Ty Segall, King Khan or The Soft Boys then get that date marked in your diary.
