Cold In Berlin - Take Control

Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk

By the sounds of those fearsome set of pipes you wouldn't want to mess with Cold In Berlin singer Maya, she doesn't seem like she takes any shit from anyone. This isn't just roaring rage though, this is powerful, quaking singing that instantly grabs you by the bollocks and doesn't let go until the end. Having recorded in a former metal home by a cemetery it's perhaps unsurprising that the results are slightly psychotic. The song is post-punk brought bang up to date, it prowls and broods and looks at you menacingly. You're not supposed to feel comfortable in the company of this song.

To pull off this effect is no mean feat, so credit where it's due, Cold In Berlin sound both venomous and huge yet resolutely underground, you couldn't mistake this for stadium rock. It's rather like someone deciding that goth (proper goth, not the emo pretend goth) needed a kick up the backside and these were the people to do it. The video is similarly dark and psychedelic, and possibly designed to make you feel seasick or give you an epileptic fit. Probably both. Whatever your views on this track, there's no arguing that Cold In Berlin don't do things by halves.
