Toucan - Swim EP

EP review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk

Perhaps the whole world is being consumed by dreamy music at the moment, maybe our collective subconscious is causing this as a direct retaliation posed by nuclear and climate threats, freak natural disasters, the west being wasteful while the developing world struggle to survive in poverty, made even worse by the global economic crisis and new wars starting every week. Or maybe that's just some kind of hippyish idea I've just thought of. Maybe as magnets for dreampop we just get sent an awful lot of it. That seems a more likely explanation. Sydney duo Toucan fit the bill (pun intended) perfectly for those wanting some soothing and misty sounds to sooth the mind and be taken to a different world for a while.

There's a track on the 'Swim' EP called 'Warrior', but it's as far from violence and ugly bravado as you can get; all sighing vocals and subtle piano and strings. It certainly transports you to a better place mentally, and it's not alone in doing so. Before we get to that particular song, 'Lonely' has already set the tone, one of warmth and love, especially with it's cry of "let's just be together". 'Mr Television' changes things considerably, being a somewhat jazzy pop track, it's a surprising deviation and a good song, although it slightly interrupts the flow. On 'Her World' they combine both styles and the production makes the chorus sound exquisite. The title-track is something of an epic closer and again it combines everything we've heard on the EP, summing up Toucan in a single song. I for one am happy to keep dreaming along.
