There's been talk of a grunge revival for a couple of years now, in the UK this particularly came to prominence when Yuck were being treated like demigods by the new music press. Since then there's been a new grunge revivalist being championed almost weekly, but despite this there's still bugger all grunge making the charts. Our take on this? The sound never went away, the media focused on other stuff for a bit, and when they got bored of it and needed a new scene or a new revival to sell copies of their publication (hello there NME!) they decided that plaid shirts and noisy, 90s-influenced alt-rockers would be their solution. I'm sure many bands were glad of their five minutes in the spotlight of that week's edition.
Gun Outfit have been going a few years and have a few albums to their name already, with new LP 'Hard Coming Down' out at the start of April. It's this band as much as any newcomers that deserve to be marked out as important figures in the pretend grunge revival, purely because they're better than most of the stoned, slacker newcomers with fuzzy guitars out there. New single 'Flyin' Low, Maria' is a belter. Musically you can hear Bob Mould and Dinosaur Jr. (both enjoying a resurgence themselves) and we're talking high quality experimental punk/rock sounds here. Carrie Keith's vocals are the cherry on the top, containing more quivering power and emotion than the faux angsty screams of any teenage chancers. It's time for the new music press to get with it and actually feature some of the genuinely interesting bands who are making songs like this.
