Hawklion - Gold & Silver EP

EP review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk

Much has been made of the lack of guitar music in the charts in the last two or three years. Unless you're arena rock titans (Muse, Foo Fighters, Biffy Clyro) the traditional indie bands, with the odd exception, have made little headway. Those that have captured the attention of the wider public are those who embrace pop music and are happy to incorporate electronic elements to their tunes. We're talking about bands such as Everything Everything, Friendly Fires, Two Door Cinema Club and so on. If this is what's needed to transfer you from cult concern to quitting the day jobs then Dublin trio Hawklion are in the right ballpark with this debut EP.

You could almost describe what they're doing as electro-pop but it's rooted in indie/rock. Drums and guitar mingle with the synthetic sounds, if you saw them live you'd expect live musicians rather than a backing track, and that includes the synths which play a big part in their sound. The title-track is pumped-up to sound huge, so you can tell they're aiming high and this technique is very much the blueprint for the following three tracks. The songs are good too, they sound well thought through, if a little derivative - but that's never stopped anyone else. In short, Hawklion are a band loaded with potential, they just need to find that instant radio hit that will break them, and good as this EP is they don't quite find it here, although 'Marseille' comes close. You do get the sense that it could simply be a matter of time though.
