Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk
The first stirrings of a new album by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds came with the very fine single 'We No Who U R' at the start of December. It's now confirmed that 'Push The Sky', the latest from the man so dark he was born with a tail (fact!) will be with us on February 18, and this week the second single, 'Jubilee Street' has been unveiled. Fans of The Bad Seeds won't be disappointed in the least, as this track bears all the hallmarks of a future favourite, pretty much every box is ticked yet there's no hint of anything formulaic about it. Let's look at the evidence.
It goes without saying that the mood is dark, the music brooding and prowling, slightly repetitively which adds to the overall atmosphere. Guitars lead the way, the lyrics are obscure and often obtuse ("I've got a foetus on leash" anyone?). Once we get towards the five-minute mark things intensify; strings wail, guitars become more prominent, voices in the background come more to the fore; it's similar in mood to some Spiritualized tracks, particularly with the gospel feel that it ends with. Two tracks in then, and the signs are pointed towards a potential classic.
