Summer Aviation - Thrust/Love So Fine

Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk

After a gap of a couple of months we were beginning to think that the trend of lovebirds making sweet music together had finally stopped. Nope. Summer Aviation are husband and wife duo Kevin (formerly of The Melody Unit) and Lee Kelly who reside in Seattle but make sunshine-pop music, probably at odds with what we're guessing is currently a somewhat chilly location. This single is sweet indiepop that belongs in bleary-eyed, sun-drenched places. So for them (and depending on your location, maybe you too) these two songs offering a timely bit of escapism from floods, snow storms and even wild-fires that are currently ravaging parts of the globe.

Comprising of a cover of 'Love So Fine' (covered by countless bands in the 60s) which is a worthwhile reworking and suits their style very well, it's their original that's the better track here. 'Thrust' is held together with the static electricity created by electric guitars and the melody is equally catchy. It's a bit like Stereolab and Belle & Sebastian getting together for a jam (possibly with Teenage Fanclub manning the desk); there's that droning guitar and electronics of the former, with the slight twee-pop sound and structure of the latter. It's not two bands you'd naturally think of putting together, but however Summer Aviation came up with this sound you have to applaud them for it, it works fabulously.
